Hack, hack.
Grumble, grumble.
It’s cold, wet and soggy in our little corner of south London.
And we seem to have been battling sore throats all winter.
Not full on go to bed flu, just background grottiness. It’s a combination of run down immunity and the traffic pollution which has got horrid in London. (What’s it like round you?)
But the pollution ain’t going anywhere fast, so we’ve been dosing up on this good old fashioned, totally natural cough mixture you can whip up yourself in no time and keep in the fridge.
It’s a brilliant quick DIY cough remedy for adults and for kids that can relieve dry coughs fast so our throats don’t get even more sore and inflamed. It’s our go to cough remedy at the first sign of a cough or sore throat but we also use it to sooth bad coughs along with this easy DIY cold & flu remedy if we have got coughs with nasty colds or flu symptoms.
And we really do prefer it to OTC cough medicines.

Natural Cough Mixture Ingredients
All you need for this quick DIY cough remedy are:
- 1 lemon
- Natural runny honey – it must be proper honey!
- A bottle of glycerin.
Glycerin’s a brilliant natural remedy for everything from broken nails to hard heels. AND it’s the secret ingredient in those super sized bubbles you see street entertainers blowing! Who knew?
You can get it over the counter at a chemist or pharmacy.
But the key is really the honey and lemon which both have natural antibiotic and antiseptic powers. The honey has been shown to be the most effective ingredient available to sooth the throat and prevent persistent coughing. (N.B. Honey should not be given to babies.)

Making Natural Cough Mixture
To make the cough mixture, just squeeze out your lemon and pour the juice into a jar.
Then add equal parts of runny honey and glycerin, i.e. add as much of each as you got juice out of your lemon. Heat it very slightly over a pan of water or in the microwave. And mix it all up.
And there you go! Instant sore throat relief.
It will keep in the fridge for 2 or 3 day, but I tend just to make small amounts daily as we need it. One super useful hack is to squeeze lemon juice into an ice cube tray and freeze the lemon juice so you always have small quantities of fresh lemon juice to hands for both natural remedies and cooking.
I do hope this quick DIY natural cough remedy works for you and your family. Don’t forget to save for later.

Hi! I’m trying to make this remedy, but I have a few questions: 1) how do you use it? Orally?
2) I bought Glycerin USP from Walmart – would it work?
3) would you suggest to use it right away? As I see that you wrote it only lasts for couple of days.
Hope to hear from you soon!
Thank you in advance

Hi there – Glycerin USP should be fine as the USP shows it meets the standard for food and medicinal use. I just make up small batches of enough doses for a couple of days and keep that in a jar in the fridge so whoever needs it can easily take a spoonful. Hope that helps best wishes Alice
