Oatmeal Bath For Sunburn
In my experience an oatmeal bath is very good for very bad sunburn. It is my go to natural sunburn remedy.
To make an oat bath for sunburn :
- Blend a cup or so of oats
- With a cup or so of water or milk
- Add to a bath of cool-tepid water
- Soak in bath for 15-20 minutes.
If you don’t have a blender just chuck a cup of oats in the bath. You can also add milk and herbs.
After oatmeal bath, gently pat dry, then apply natural remedies to :
- Prevent blisters in vulnerable areas
- Keep burns cool & itch free.
An oatmeal bath is also a great way to treat mosquito bites naturally.
Potato For Sunburn Relief
Bizarrely raw potato really does work as a natural sunburn remedy!!
It is most helpful for preventing blisters in thin skinned areas like temples, knuckles & feet tops.
To apply potato for instant relief :
- Hold slice of potato on burn
- Or grate peeled raw potato
- Mash up a little
- Then apply like a poultice to burn, holding on with a cloth
- Hold potato on for 10 minutes.
It sounds mad but this remedy even healed a burn without blistering after I poured hot oil on my hand.
Natural Yoghurt For Sunburn Relief
Natural yoghurt is an excellent home remedy for instant sunburn relief.
It is cooling, anti-inflammatory, anti-itch and also a natural antibiotic.
Apply yoghurt to sunburn as you would ordinary after-sun cream or apply thickly for overnight healing.
The yoghurt must be both sugar and sweetener free.
Best Herbs For Sunburn
The best herbs for sunburn relief are:
- Rosemary
- Oregano
- Basil
- Thyme
- Chamomile
You can use dried and fresh herbs. Add a spoonful to a cooling bath.
You could use essential oils but personally I am not keen on them.
Coconut Oil For Sunburn
Coconut oil like yoghurt is a cooling anti-inflammatory and antibiotic.
You can use it just like after-sun for instant sunburn relief. It is a good remedy for overnight sunburn relief as it keeps skin moisturised.
Honey For Sunburn
Honey is a good natural sunburn remedy to prevent blistering.
After a cooling bathe apply a few pea-sized spots of honey to :
- Temples
- Nose
- Cheekbones
- Back of hands
- Top of feet
Or other areas of tight skin which are vulnerable to very bad sunburn.
Honey is also a great remedy for mosquito bites, cold sores, sore throats, heartburn & more.
But it must be real, not fake, honey.
Milk For Sunburn
You can add milk to a cooling bath for instant sunburn relief.
Add 2 cups of milk to a tepid-cool bath and bathe for 20 minutes. Or dip a face cloth in milk & tepid water and apply as a compress to the burn.
Olive Oil For Sunburn
Olive oil can be used like after-sun for quick sunburn relief after a cooling bathe.
It keeps skin moist and the anti-oxidants in the oil help skin to heal.
Olive oil can help heal sunburn overnight.
Teabags For Sunburn
Both green and black tea can be used as natural home remedies for quick sunburn relief.
Both types of tea can relieve the sting and help sunburn heal.
The easiest way to use teabags for sunburn relief is to add 5-10 teabags to a cooling tea bath you soak the burn in for 20 minutes.
Alternatively brew 1 teabag in tepid water and apply to e.g. temples, neck to relieve pain and stop blisters.
Baking Soda For Sunburn
Baking soda (bicarbonate of soda) can be used as a quick home remedy to relieve sunburn pain.
You can either :
- Add a few tablespoons to a cooling bath of tepid not cold water
- Or you can apply as a paste mixed with a little water, aloe vera, coconut oil or natural yoghurt
- Gently rinse off after 15 minutes.
Aloe Vera
Aloe vera can be a great natural remedy for sunburn sting.
But bathe skin in tepid water before applying aloe vera as otherwise it can make skin sting more.
Aloe vera is very useful for curing sunburn overnight as it keeps skin cool and moist and helps healing.
But you get what you pay for with aloe vera. Much is full of chemicals that aggravate skin. Coconut oil or yoghurt is often a better option.
Cucumber
Cucumber is a useful home remedy to treat sunburn especially on delicate parts of your face. It is cooling, moisturising and healing.
After bathing sunburn in cool water apply cucumber slices directly or :
- Blend cucumber on its own or with natural yoghurt or coconut oil
- Apply to sunburn as thick paste
- Leave on for 15 minutes
- Rinse off with tepid water
- Very gently pat skin dry
- Apply and leave on moisturising coconut oil, yoghurt or aloe vera.
And there you go, the very best natural sunburn remedies you can make fast at home for quick relief.
