Funny books for kids are gold dust!
They get even the most reluctant readers burning the midnight oil to read just one more chapter.
So what are the best funny books for kids?
Well Harry Potter and Roald Dahl are obviously very funny.
And we love the laugh out loud crazy humour of David Walliams – we’re very excited to be going to see Gangsta Granny (UK) at the theatre this summer!
We’ve also recently discovered and loved the new Accidental Pirates (UK) series – which is very adventurous and scary but incredibly funny.
BUT – and there is a BUT …
… not all of these are easy for kids to read themselves.
At least when they’re getting started.
And this is where some of the comic influenced funny books really come into their own.
The simple stuff like less words on a page, drawings & doodles and zany graphics all help keep kids going through a chapter book when reading is still hard work.
So here’s five funny books for kids that are all written in a more comic book style.
They’re nearly all ones that came to us as presents.
Which is always a massive seal of approval isn’t it?
If you gift someone a book it’s gotta be good!
Funny Books For Kids
1. The Jolly Rogers
First off is the Jolly Rogers series starting with The Jolly Rogers & the Ghostly Galleon (UK).
It’s a shiver-my-timbers page turning pirate adventure with tight, what-will-happen-next chapters and fab pictures.
It’s very readable for 6 ups. And also a good listen for younger kids or those not quite reading.
2. Mabel Jones
There’s more pirate adventure and fun in The Unlikely Adventures of Mabel Jones (UK).
And its zany humour has transformed more than one child we know into a regular book worm.
3. Dork Diaries
The characters in the phenomenally popular Dork Diaries (UK) series are a little bit older.
But are still very appealing and accessible to 7 and 8 year olds at that tipping point of starting to read chapter books to themselves.
They’re fabulously funny but still have something really quite powerful to say to kids as they start to struggle with anxiety about fitting in at school.
4. Horry Henry
Now Horrid Henry (UK) needs no introduction does he?
Sometimes I really don’t like Henry! Heh, I’m not meant to, I’m a mum 🙂
But written in the classic comic spirit of the Beano, Francesca Simon’s massive series is up there with Harry Potter in getting kids reading.
Buy a big set for the summer and watch your kids read!
5. Stink Bomb and Ketchup Face
Stink Bomb and Ketchup Face (UK) are in a similar spirit to Horrid Henry but boy they are bonkers!
In their first book they have to take on the baddest of bad badgers!
With just a little bit of help from the King.
It’s a fab start to another series of funny books for kids which are great for 6 and ups.
So there you go five lots of very funny books for early readers.
