Herbal Teas For Natural Headache Relief

December 23, 2021 by Alice 1 Comment

Herbal Teas for Natural Headache Relief

Natural headache remedies are a great way to avoid pain killers.

But many of us struggle to find quick relief that works for our headache.

The big problem is headaches can be caused by everything from blocked sinuses and stress to constipation and perimenopause.

Which means headaches vary and cause different types of pain.

So the big secret to effective natural headache relief - whilst we tackle underlying causes - is to target the right remedy at the right headache.

Herbal Teas For Different Types Of Headache

And I have for you here 6 different herbal headache relief teas to target different types of pain:

  • Tension Headaches
  • Persistent Stress Headaches
  • Instant Headache Relief
  • Sinus Headaches
  • Cluster Headaches
  • Bedtime Headache Relief

They can all be made from kitchen herbs & spices so you can act fast at the first hint of a headache.

I do hope they give you the quick headache relief you need to skip the painkillers & get on with your day.

MEDICAL DISCLAIMER

This post does not give qualified medical advice. Headaches can be a sign of serious illness.

Common Headache Causes

Common Causes Of Headaches

Headaches are usually a symptom of a problem elsewhere in a body.

So treating our headache with painkillers makes no sense. We may get quick relief but the headache will come back because we haven't tackled the underlying cause.

In fact, it is crazier than that, as painkillers make things worse.

Three key causes of headaches are:

  • Gut damage
  • Inflammation
  • Stress.

But repeated use of painkillers to ease headache pain can:

  1. Damage our gut lining
  2. Which triggers inflammation
  3. Which causes stress!!!

So whilst using the herbal headache teas in this post, do look for real remedies for other symptoms e.g.:

  • Constipation
  • Perimenopause
  • Bloating
  • Gastritis
  • Blocked Sinuses
  • UTI & Bladder Infections
  • Period Pain
  • Colds
  • Lack of Sleep
  • Stress

And if you are struggling to spot the causes of your headaches check out this guide to surprising headache triggers including magnesium and iron deficiency.

Remember : recurrent headaches can be symptoms of serious illness. Always talk to your doctor.

Now onto the quick headache teas.

6 Simple Herbal Teas For Headache Relief

DIY Herbal Headache Relief Teas

These 6 herbal headache teas are all simple DIY recipes you can make from basic herbs and spices in your kitchen cupboard or herb garden.

You do NOT need to buy any fancy headache teas or essential oils!!

1. Ginger Tea For Stress & Tension Headaches

Ginger Herbal Tea For Headache Relief

Ginger tea relieves stress and tension headaches by relaxing blood vessels.

It's also a natural remedy for gastritis, constipation and cystitis so can provide long term relief if these are a cause of your headaches.

To make ginger headache tea:

  • Add to a cup or so of water:
    • a sliced inch of ginger root
    • or a teaspoon of dried ginger
  • Bring to the boil
  • Simmer gently for 15 minutes
  • Strain & add a teaspoon or so of lemon and honey to taste.

This makes a strong ginger tea which is great for a bad headache.

For a gentler ginger headache tea, bring water to boil and steep ginger in the boiled water for a few minutes.

Ginger headache tea can exacerbate heartburn by over relaxing the LES.

2. Mint Tea For Persistent Stress Headaches

Mint Herbal Tea For Headache Relief

Mint tea relaxes blood vessels to reduce stress headaches in a similar way to headache relief medication.

Drinking mint tea regularly can reduce physical stress in our bodies and help prevent the build up of persistent stress headaches.

To make mint tea simply:

  • Pour freshly boiled water over:
    • a small teaspoon of dried mint
    • or 5 to 6 mint leaves.
  • Leave to steep for 5 minutes
  • Strain
  • Then sip away.

It is super easy to grow mint from cuttings for a supply of fresh leaves but dried mint is also great.

Don't drink mint tea with heartburn.

3. Clove Tea for Instant Headache Relief

Clove Herbal Tea For Instant Headache Relief

Clove tea is often the best herbal tea to drink for instant headache relief.

This is because cloves have natural anaesthetic powers that can actually block our detection of pain.

To make clove headache tea:

  • Pour boiled water over 1 teaspoon of:
    • Roughly ground cloves
    • Or clove powder
  • Steep for 20 minutes
  • Then strain
  • Flavour with honey or cinnamon.

To avoid pain killers during periods, make extra and keep it, strained, in a jar in the fridge to heat as needed.

4. Coriander Seed Tea For Sinus Headaches

Coriander Seed Herb Tea For Sinus Headache Relief

Traditional Ayurvedic medicine used coriander seed tea to relieve headaches caused by sinus pressure.

To make coriander headache tea:

  • Pour boiling water over 1 tablespoon of coriander seeds
  • Steep for 5 minutes
  • Strain
  • Sweeten with honey.

For extra relief from sinus headaches try these other natural sinus relief remedies alongside your tea.

5. Rosemary Tea for Cluster Headaches

Rosemary Herb Tea For Cluster Headaches

Rosemary is a good herbal tea for relieving intense cluster headaches.

Cluster headaches are caused by muscle spams and rosemary has natural anti-spasmodic powers.

To make rosemary headache tea:

  • Pour boiled water over:
    • 1 sprig of rosemary
    • or 1 teaspoon of dried rosemary
  • Steep for 5 minutes
  • You can add honey but to be honest I think it is lovely as it is.

It is super easy to grow rosemary and it is a natural antibiotic you can add to quick remedies for e.g.:

  • Bloating
  • Cold sores
  • Mosquito bites.

6. Chamomile Tea For Bedtime Headache Relief

Chamomile Herb Tea For Headaches At Night

Sleep can't always relieve headaches but lack of sleep guarantees an even worse headache in the morning.

So chamomile, a sedative, is a good herbal headache tea at bedtime.

It gives instant headache relief and helps us get to sleep and stay asleep.

To make chamomile tea:

  • Pour freshly boiled water over
    • 2 teaspoons of fresh flowers
    • Or 1 teaspoon of dried flowers
  • Steep for 5 minutes
  • Strain and sip.

So there you go, 6 quick herbal headache teas you can make easily for natural headache relief targeted at specific types of headache.
